When asked, "What is Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class?" Bikram says:

Hatha Yoga is not mine, it is thousands of years old. It has been handed down from master to disciple, one to one. I received my formal training from my guru, Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Parmahansa Yogananda. There are three basic principles of Hatha Yoga: freezing the body in the posture of the prescribed number of seconds, proper control of the breath while in the posture according to the posture, and following the posture with the minimum of twenty seconds in savasana, complete relaxation.

After my guru scientifically established the methods of curing chronic disease using Hatha Yoga, he sent me to Mumbai to teach Hatha Yoga to sick people. I found that there were more people who needed me than I could help. There wasn't enough time in the day to help everyone. I thought that if there was some way I could teach everyone the right postures in exactly the correct order, no matter what their disease condition was, then I could teach people in groups and then help more people. I researched the diseases and the postures, and after many years of research and verification, I arrived at the sequence of twenty-six postures and two breathing exercises.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of trying the right way. I cannot overstate the importance of doing your Hatha Yoga in heat. You are changing the construction of your body.  The significance of this series is that no matter what condition you are in, what chronic disease you may have, or how old you are, the solution to your physical and mental problems is in the sequence. That's why I always say, "It's never too late, it's never too bad, you're never too old, you're never too sick to start from scratch once again, to be born once again."
